Lowers Sixth Economics conference

Lowers Sixth Economics conference

On Thursday 8 October 13 of our Lower Sixth economists attended an Institute of Economic Affairs (IEA) conference day in Cambridge, along with students from six other schools. Three talks were delivered by speakers from the IEA, each followed by small group discussions and then a whole group discussion. The topics ranged from macroeconomic issues in China and the global economy, and microeconomics and finance in The City, to economics of the future. The talks related to concepts that the girls have already been introduced to as part of their Economics studies as well as ideas above what is covered in the syllabus.

A highlight for the girls came during one of the group discussions when the girls discussed potential technological breakthroughs which would enable future intensive global economic growth, with ideas ranging from 3D printing and online classrooms to teleportation and rocket-fuelled rubbish bins! There was also a session on careers in Economics, outlining the breadth of possibilities available from studying an Economics related degree. It was an enjoyable day and provided much food for thought.
