A Level results 2020

Our 2020 Sixth Form students yet again celebrated brilliant academic successes, with 30% of grades awarded at A* and 68% of grades awarded at A*-A.

However, the story of 2020 is about much more than results. This year, St Mary’s is celebrating the resilience and optimism students have shown, in the face of disruption created by Covid-19. In their response to this unexpected life challenge, the class of 2020 are officially ‘All Stars’.

We are disappointed by the way that the final A Level grades have been determined by the awarding bodies and recognise that the process has not fully rewarded many of our students.

Here are our 2020 headlines

  • 30% A* grades
  • 68% A*/A grades
  • 90% A* to B grades
  • 96% A* to C grades

Subject highlights include particularly strong performances in the arts, languages, mathematics and computing:

  • 100% A* grades in Arabic, Latin, Music, Spanish and Pre-U Mandarin
  • 100% A*/A grades in Art and Design, Drama, French and Greek
  • 100% A* to B grades in Classical Civilisation, Computing, Further Mathematics, Photography and Theology

This year's students successfully secured their chosen higher education courses and are pursuing diverse, exciting directions with leaver destinations including: Medicine at UEA, Law and Spanish at Bristol, Engineering at UCL, History at York and Conservation Biology and Ecology at Exeter.

GCSE studentGCSE Results 2020

Our 2020 results continue to represent the high academic standards we expect, but equally impressive is the ‘keep calm and carry on’ attitude girls have adopted as they prepare to embark on the vital next stage of their education.

Our headline GCSE results are:

  • 45% A* grades (9-8)
  • 66% A* - A grades (9-7)
  • 84% A*- B grades (9-6)
  • 95% A*-B grades (9-5)
  • 99% A*- C grades (9-4)

Results were strong across the board, from languages to sciences:

  • 88% achieved A* in Music, 75% achieved A* in Mandarin, and 68% achieved A* in Biology
  • 100% achieved A*-A in Latin Language, 86% achieved A*-A in Geography and 84% achieved A*-A in Biology, Chemistry and Physics

Alongside celebrating academic successes, we would also like pay tribute to all the other qualities these amazing young people have shown us. In an uncertain and rapidly changing world, results alone are not enough – it is character that will enable our girls go on to achieve their ambitions in the coming years.

Warm congratulations from our Headmistress ...

“I am so proud that yet again our students have achieved outstanding results, especially in the face of, and in despite of, the challenges that this year has brought. This year has brought many of our core values to the fore, such as friendship, community and hope. Our 2020 leavers have demonstrated these values so brilliantly. I commend them on being true St Mary’s girls.” Charlotte Avery, Headmistress

Maria K. (Pictured left) our Head Boarder is amongst the students celebrating exceptional results today.

““I’m really looking forward to starting Sixth Form at St Mary’s, having greatly enjoyed my past five years at the Senior School. I am so grateful for the wonderful community and incredibly supportive teachers that have enabled me to achieve my goals. My A Level choices are English, History, Latin and Theology and I can’t wait to get started in September!””

Eliza M. celebrating 11 9’s (equivalent to high A*s)

“I am so glad that all those years ago I chose to go to St Mary's. Not only has it enabled me to achieve fantastic GCSE and A Level results, critical to the next step in my education, but it has also given me some of the most enjoyable, wonderful years of my life! Though I have now officially left St Mary's, I still feel part of the most extraordinary community and it has amazed me how that community has really pulled together over the difficult last few months.”

Molly P. Head Girl 2019/20, going on to study English and Drama at the University of Exeter

“My time at St Mary's has not only allowed me to achieve my best academically, but also grow as a person with the support of the amazing staff and close-knit community which lies at the heart of the school.”

Elena G. A Level student 2020, going on to study Conservation Biology and Ecology at the University of Exeter
