Creative writing competition

St Mary’s School, Cambridge, is delighted to launch its eighth annual Creative Writing Competition.

The theme for this year’s Creative Writing Competition is ‘Nature and the Environment’. We would like you write a poem about some aspect of the natural world. From haikus to sonnets to rhymes and free verse, we are looking for poems in any form that explore the natural world and what it means to you.

You may like to describe a place or scene from nature that is important to you. You could choose to write about the environment and the threat of climate change. Perhaps you will feel inspired to write about an animal or creature that inspires you.

Find handy tips in our "Top Tips" section, and be inspired by snippets of stories from previous year's competition.

The competition is open to boys and girls from Year 5 to Year 8 across Cambridgeshire. The deadline for this year's competition is Monday 14 October 2019.  Your hand-written, or typed, entry should be no more than 500 words. Along with your entry, please complete and submit your entry online.

The presentation evening will be held at St Mary’s Senior School on Thursday 7 November 2019 and the winner of each age category will win a book token. All the competitors who come to our presentation evening will receive a free book.
