AS Level Classical Civilisation and Latin Lectures

Lower Sixth Latin and Classical Civilisation students recently visited University of Cambridge to attend lectures by leading Classicists on the texts they are studying for their AS Levels. Students of Classical Civilisation appreciated hearing about the evolution and destruction of Pompeii, and talks on what it meant to be a hero in epic poems, namely Homer’s Odyssey and Virgil’s Aeneid, which provoked discussion. The group enjoyed lunch in the sunshine and visited the Museum of Classical Archaeology where the girls began to think about the development of Greek art and representations of mythology, ahead of the Greek Art module next year.

The Latin students learnt more about the historical and political context of Cicero's de Imperio and considered the nature of power. The girls discovered more about the continued importance of Classics through examining the reception of Ovid’s Metamorphoses throughout history, as well as visiting the museum to find the art works relevant to their study of myth and history.
