Year 11 Prize Giving celebrations as they begin study-leave
On a sunny May afternoon, we came together to celebrate the achievements and spirit of the Year 11 students at their annual Prizegiving Ceremony. The event marked a significant milestone—the end of formal lessons and the beginning of study leave—as students prepare to sit their GCSE exams.
The ceremony was filled with pride, reflection, and encouragement. Staff and students gathered to mark the end of a chapter that has seen Year 11 grow in confidence, resilience, and ambition. Teachers spoke warmly about the students’ individual journeys, acknowledging their contributions both in and beyond the classroom.
While exams are still to be sat, and results are still to come, the focus of the afternoon was very much on the present—on recognising effort, progress, leadership, creativity, and the positive impact each student has made to school life. From leading student councils and performing on stage, to excelling in sport and offering quiet support to others, the Year 11 students have left their mark on the St Mary’s community.
Dr Paddy Wallace, Deputy Head Academic, offered his congratulations and encouragement, highlighting the students’ commitment and potential as they enter the final phase of their GCSE journey. He spoke of the importance of balance—between focus and rest, determination and self-belief—as the girls begin their study leave.
Head, Hannah Helliar closed the ceremony with reflections on the strength and individuality of the year group. “Today is not just about recognising success,” she said, “but about honouring your values, your kindness, and your growth. You have shown what it means to support one another and embrace all that school life has to offer.”
As certificates and prizes were awarded, the atmosphere was one of celebration and anticipation. The students left the School with smiles, hugs, and a sense of shared purpose as they move forward to meet the challenges of the coming weeks.
Our Year 11 class of 2024 now step into their final moments of Senior School with the full support of the St Mary’s community behind them. Their time in Year 11 has been shaped by friendship, perseverance, and quiet confidence—qualities that will carry them through the exam season and far beyond.
This year we introduced a new award in memory of a beloved alumnae, Dr Sonia Channell.
The Dr Sonia Channell Science Award is in recognition of a treasured alumnae, in thanks for her generous legacy donation to the Sister Christopher Memorial Fund. The Sister Christopher Memorial Fund provides financial assistance (bursaries) for young girls from a diverse range of lower-income backgrounds, with exceptional merit and potential, to attend our esteemed school. Dr Sonia Channell studied at St Mary’s in the 1940s. She then studied Medicine at Girton College, University of Cambridge. Dr Channell was a strong advocate for women and young girls in science.
