St Mary’s Triumphs in 46th Annual Ludi Scaenici Latin Play Competition

St Mary’s is delighted to celebrate the success of our talented Year 8 and 9 Latin students who were triumphant in the recent Ludi Scaenici Latin play competition.

Ludi Scaenici, or Stage Games, is an annual event in which students write, direct and perform original short plays. As if this is not challenging enough, the entire performance is spoken in Latin. Students need to pronounce the Latin accurately and expressively to convey the storyline to an audience who might not necessarily know all the Latin words.

This year's event was hosted by St Mary’s for the first time in the competition's 46-year history, welcoming students from The Perse School and Stephen Perse Foundation for a wonderful celebration of language, drama and classical learning.

Each school presented a different tale. The Perse Upper performed a humorous retelling of the story of Gaius Mucius Scaevola, Stephen Perse presented the story of The Boy Who Cried Wolf, and St Mary’s told the myth of King Midas.

St Mary’s cast were outstanding, with Charis C. starring as the king fixated on gold while Mahika C. played his devoted daughter. Ruth D-C. became the confused worshipper Silenus, Kinsce O. portrayed the god Bacchus, and Imogen B-C. was the concerned and industrious maid. Angel C. was responsible for props.

The judges, commended St Mary’s students for their excellent interaction with one another and the clarity of their Latin pronunciation - earning them the coveted first prize.

Congratulations to all of the performers for some fantastic Latin performances and thank you to everyone who helped make this year's competition such a memorable occasion, including the judges, Dr Rosanna Omitowoju from the University of Cambridge Classics Faculty, and Mrs Natasha Kosanovic from Hills Road Sixth Form.
