Life lessons beyond the curriculum - Year 13 learn to manage money wisely
Financial literacy is a crucial life skill for young adults, particularly as they prepare for university and the independence that comes with it. To support our Year 13 students in developing these essential skills, we recently welcomed back Jo Baldwin, Director of Fiscorum Financial Intelligence, for a new series of engaging workshops on managing personal finances at university and beyond.
Jo delivered two interactive sessions that tackled key financial topics that can be easily overlooked by students. They explored the difference between good and bad debt, gained a clearer understanding of credit history and interest, and examined the financial implications of student loans. Jo also offered practical advice on managing overdrafts and credit cards responsibly, helping students make informed and confident financial decisions.
In addition to these practical lessons, the workshops encouraged students to think about their personal relationship with money, promoting a mindset geared toward long-term financial well-being. Students also learned about budgeting for living costs, planning for everyday expenses, and the basics of taxation and income while studying. These sessions were both eye-opening and empowering, equipping students with knowledge and strategies to navigate financial independence successfully.
This initiative continues St Mary’s commitment to preparing our students for every aspect of life after school, ensuring they are ready to thrive both academically and financially as they take their next steps.
