Insightful careers talk inspires St Mary’s students interested in medicine

Year 10-12 students at St Mary’s were thrilled to welcome Dr Iain Goodhart, Consultant in Intensive Care Medicine and Anaesthesia, who delivered an informative talk on careers in medicine and navigating the medical school application process.

Dr Goodhart reassured students that there are many routes into medicine, including starting in nursing or studying biomedical sciences before applying to medical school. He also highlighted the importance of resilience in managing the emotional challenges of the profession and emphasised that every member of a clinical team plays a vital role in patient care.

Students were especially engaged by Dr Goodhart’s work on virtual wards, which support elderly patients to remain at home with their families, improving recovery outcomes while maintaining independence. The session concluded with a lively Q&A, offering practical advice to help students explore a future in medicine.
