St Mary’s creative writing scholar shines in creative writing competitions

A Year 8 St Mary’s creative writing scholar has demonstrated her passion, enthusiasm and flair for imaginative writing after scooping the top spot in two creative writing competitions this month.

Imogen C. entered the first competition, Curious Tales, over the summer holidays. The competition was run by antique shop - Vintiques of Surrey. Entrants were asked to write a story, in a maximum of 3,000 words, based on one item within the shop. Imogen chose an old black bear to be the main character in her story. Giving the bear life and personality, Imogen’s submission was crowned overall winner by the judge – earning her tickets to visit the Harry Potter Studios along with an adult.

The judge commended Imogen’s story as ‘heartfelt’, ‘affecting’ and ‘a beautiful tribute to growing up’. Imogen was also praised by the judge, who described her as ‘one powerful writer’ and said that her piece ‘completely captured the heart of working in an antique/vintage shop’.

Imogen also entered two categories in a local ‘Creative Royston’ writing competition. She scooped first place in the age 11-18 poetry category, with ‘Spring twirled’, which she wrote in school over the summer term. Commenting on her seasonal inspired piece, the judges said:

“We really enjoyed your poem.  It had great energy, imagination and creativity.  We liked the use of alliteration and the dancing images.”

Imogen also took second place in the Creative Writing 11-14 age category, with ‘The Seasons’. The judges praised her submission saying:

“The Seasons is a beautifully written piece that clearly shows the character and feelings of the tree who is the main character in the story.”
