Brush Strokes and Bold Adventures: Our Talented Art Scholars aim high on the Standing Tall Art Trail

Brush Strokes and Bold Adventures: Our Talented Art Scholars aim high on the Standing Tall Art Trail

Following the success of ‘Cows About Cambridge’ in 2021, when dozens of decorated sculptures invaded the town, we couldn’t wait to get involved with the next artistic, fundraising collaboration between Break Charity and the award-winning team at Wild in Art.

We are excited to be embarking on the aptly named 'Standing Tall' sculpture safari right here in Cambridge this Spring-Summer - a dazzling herd of 32 giraffe sculptures, each soaring to a majestic 2.5 meters, alongside a parade of 50 smaller, 1.5 meter tall Mini-G Giraffes

The event will raise funds for Break Charity which is known for its incredible work across East Anglia, helping young people, especially those on the cusp of care, in care, or transitioning out of it. They offer youngsters and families the support and time they need to reach the heights of their potential.

Wild in Art are the architects of epic, creativity-fuelled, and crowd-pleasing public art extravaganzas that unite businesses, artists, and communities. Their public art trails are a testament to the magnificent union of creativity and innovation.

A decade of collaboration between these two has raised over £1 million and involved local schools, colleges and artists. With St Mary’s charitable heritage and passionate art department, our participation is a perfect fit as we also celebrate our 125th anniversary year.

The upcoming journey of giraffe artworks, each sponsored by a local business, will roam the streets of Cambridge for ten weeks, starting in March 2024, captivating the imaginations of countless Cambridge residents and visitors who will follow the creative trail.

This trail isn't just about gazing up at incredible art; it's also about turning the city into a haven of family-friendly fun and, in doing so, raising crucial funds for Break, who lift the spirits and aspirations of Cambridge's young care leavers.

At St Mary's School, our successful bid for one of these long-legged marvels of nature resulted in a flurry of creativity to come up with both a name – ‘Miraffe’ – and a design for her to proudly wear.

Two winning designs which stood out from more than 25 entries were morphed together to create our final masterpiece, and congratulations go to Temperance K. and Gemma M. for their contributions.

Our art scholars have drawn inspiration from the sweet memories of ice cream in summertime and our school's 125-year legacy to create the splendour that is Miraffe – our founder, Mary Ward’s very own giraffe. The heart of our sculpture is the waffle cone, with a scoop of strawberry ice cream, and a cherry-topped head adorned with chocolate flakes. The lower legs wear a wrapper made up of over 50 collaged articles, narrating the cherished history of our beloved school. The sculpture also represents joyfullness - one of our Mary Ward values.

A huge congratulations to all the students involved in this project and we can’t wait to see Miraffe amongst the crowds.
