Junior School Sporting Success

Junior School Sporting Success

Our Junior School pupils have been achieving incredible success across a variety of sports this half term.

At St Mary’s, sport plays a vital role in helping young girls build confidence, resilience, and teamwork while enjoying fun and healthy competition. From fencing to cross-country and football, our girls have demonstrated skill, determination, and outstanding sportsmanship.

Across all these activities, our Junior School pupils have shown that talent, perseverance, and teamwork are at the heart of St Mary’s sporting programme.

We congratulate all the girls on their fantastic achievements and look forward to seeing more success in the months ahead!

Fencing Double Victory for Layla

We are thrilled to celebrate an outstanding achievement in Junior School fencing.

Layla, in Year 6, competed at the Cardiff Academy of Fencing in November and achieved an impressive double victory, winning gold in both the U14 and U12 events.

At just 10 years old, Layla faced older and physically stronger competitors — boys and girls alike -  yet she held her own and came out on top. Her success highlights her talent, resilience, and dedication.

Fencing is one of the many extra-curricular activities at St Mary’s Junior School, giving pupils opportunities to develop skill, confidence, and a love for sport.

Cross-Country Champions

Our Junior School runners excelled at the Cambridge and Coleridge Invitational Cross-Country Competition in November, achieving several top 10 finishes out of more than 100 competitors.

Special congratulations go to Beatrix in Year 5, who claimed gold, finishing first in her year group.

Team results across the year groups were equally impressive:

Year 4 girls: 4th place out of 11 schools

Year 5 girls: 2nd place out of 10 schools, narrowly missing the top spot

Year 6 girls: strong 3rd place finish

These results reflect the girls’ commitment, resilience, and teamwork, showing how cross-country helps develop both fitness and confidence.

Junior School Football Festival

Our Year 5 and 6 pupils had a fantastic experience at a friendly football festival hosted at our Long Road Sports Ground, competing against teams from six other independent schools.

The festival offered the girls a chance to develop their skills, work as a team, and enjoy the excitement of match play in a supportive environment.

We are proud of all the pupils for their enthusiasm, sportsmanship, and dedication, demonstrating the St Mary’s spirit on and off the pitch. Football continues to be a popular extra-curricular activity, giving pupils a fun and rewarding way to stay active.
