From the Drama Captain

From the Drama Captain

When I joined St Mary's in 2013, it’s fair to say I gravitated towards Drama by joining the Year 7 Drama Club. From there, I ended up on the sound team for that summer’s show of “Much Ado About Nothing” and caught the backstage bug.

I heard on a radio interview once, “I didn’t choose acting, it chose me” and I think that’s the brilliant thing about our Drama department – anyone can be interested in anything and you’re welcome to have a go, even if it’s something you haven’t tried before.

“I didn’t choose acting, it chose me”

I don’t think Ms Roberts anticipated quite how much I would stick around throughout productions when she first met me! I’ve worked on 14 productions whilst being at St Mary’s and the confidence I’ve gained from just having the space to make mistakes and learn in is invaluable; it’s helped me grow both as a performer and as a person.

I get really bad stage fright when acting (which would surprise a lot of people), but because of the support I’ve had over the years, I’ve built up my confidence and have delivered two assemblies; one whole-school one, sharing my passion for film and theatre makers, and one to the Sixth Form about my experience of working backstage stage at Norwich’s Theatre Royal.

A Level Drama and Theatre Studies has pushed me to perform more, which I’ve always loved, but doing that alongside Abbi and Molly has been brilliant, especially as we were all involved in ‘Chicago’ together when we started the course.

Drama Captain has been a brilliant role for me over the past year, if not dissimilar to what I’ve already been doing since joining St Mary’s, with the hecticness that surrounds the department causing no end of hilarious moments! The relationships that form between everyone in Drama is unbelievable, and the bonds that have formed between year groups endure outside of the show. No two shows are ever the same – even if similar problems occur, the problem solving that everyone does is beyond what can be taught and helps us become more rounded people who can deal with the curveballs of life.
