Miss Taylor

Assistant Head: Head of Sixth Form

What was your favourite subject at school? I loved History and still do, but Economics and Business Studies quickly became my favourites once I started to study them. I can still remember the moment when I looked at the world and thought this all makes so much more sense now thanks to those subjects.

Why did you decide to become a teacher? Both of my parents are teachers so I got a lot of exposure to the profession growing up! When it came to making a career decision at university I couldn’t see that there was anything else more interesting or worthwhile than teaching.

What’s your favourite thing about working at St Mary’s School, Cambridge? Many things – not least colleagues and students. I am also really enjoying getting to know the story of Mary Ward and her values.

Favourite things! What's your all-time favourite…

Book: Hands down, Rebecca by Daphne du Maurier. I first read it when I was about 11 years old. Mrs Danvers scared me so much that I couldn’t read it all at once.

Poem: I adore reading poems by Rupert Brooke.

Film: My favourite film changes depending on what mood I am in. If it’s a rainy duvet day then I tend to reach for Band of Brothers. If I need some Tarantino then Django Unchained is top of the list. Anything by Hitchcock is brilliant, although I would particularly recommend Notorious if you haven’t seen it. Kenneth Branagh makes fantastic Shakespeare films – I have lost count of how many times I have watched Much Ado About Nothing. If I am in the need for happy films and singing I will look to the musicals.

What’s your favourite hobby? Thanks to Miss Nicky Less [Head of Modern Foreign Languages who has set up a staff running club] I am really into running at the moment. It is a great way to stay fit, make friends and enjoy being outside.

What sort of music is your favourite? My favourite place to listen to music is in the car, and road trips can only mean one thing: 90s music! I like anything I can sing along loudly to.

What is your favourite holiday destination? This is an impossible question to answer. I adore travelling around and finding new places, there is so much to discover in the world. Staying close to home, I love going to the coast and Southwold would be top of the list. Further afield, not much has beaten climbing the Inca Trail, so maybe that was my favourite holiday.

What’s your worst habit? I cannot sit still and am a horrible fidget. I always need to be doing something.

Team trivia: (without looking it up) which famous politician is depicted on the new £5 note?  I am pretty sure it’s Winston Churchill. [Correct answer from Miss Taylor.]
