Deputy Head and Pre-prep Co-ordinator, Year 2 teacher
What was your favourite subject at school? English and History
When did you decide to become a teacher? I started helping out with the Reception class when I was in Year 5 or 6 at school (although I get the feeling I was a bit too bossy!). I always wanted to be a teacher.
Why did you decide to work at St Mary’s School, Cambridge? My daughter started at St Catherine’s in the school’s first ever pre-prep class. I loved the school and asked them to let me know if any vacancies came up. A teacher was needed for Year 2, and the rest is history! 15 years later I’m still teaching Year 2. (I did teach Reception for six years as well!)
What is your favourite thing about working at this school? My favourite thing about St Mary’s School, Cambridge is that the girls are so interested in everything they are taught and always get so involved. Everyone looks after each other too, so it feels like a second home and family; although a very big one!
What's your all-time favourite…
Book: Atonement by Ian McEwan, and Secret History by Donna Tart. I‘ve just read Spies by Michael Frayn which is about boys in wartime England who think they discover a secret. All of these books have secrets in them…
Film: We’re always discussing these at home! I loved the French film Untouchable. Also, One flew over the cuckoo’s nest and The Godfather would have to be in my top ten films too.
Recipe: Delia’s Chicken Basque comes out every summer!
Hobby: Reading – although my husband would say it’s shopping!
What inspires you? My parents were children in the Second World War and my mum’s war stories are really incredible. She has a ‘get on with it’ attitude that she developed from her experiences. She was a target (literally) for a German pilot in a London air raid and an evacuee (twice!). I think her outlook on life rubbed off me. My dad’s work ethic was also inspirational when I was growing up.
What is your favourite band or type of music? A really wide range – my children keep me up to date! Also, like a lot of people I like Adele and Amy Winehouse’s powerful voices.
Where has your favourite holiday been? It’s hard to say, a lot of places for different reasons! Snorkelling on the Great Barrier Reef was amazing.
What’s your worst habit? I still bite my finger nails!
Team trivia: What was the name of the champion thoroughbred steeple chaser who achieved an unmatched historic treble when he won the Grand National in 1973, 1974 and 1977? Red Rum? [correct answer from Mrs Owens]
