Head of Mathematics
Name: Darren Kelly
Job Title: Head of Mathematics
What was your favourite subject at school? Mathematics, then Physics, then History.
Why did you choose to teach Mathematics? My Mathematics teacher encouraged me when I was in Year 7 to pursue Mathematics. When I went back to see him 25 years later he nearly fell over - I told him I now teach Mathematics and that he had inspired me. He had tears in his eyes! I have always loved Mathematics; it is the language of the universe. I love solving difficult equations and find it amazing how we use Mathematics everywhere, especially in Astronomy. I love to inspire students and pass on my passion for this great subject.
What’s your favourite thing about working here? Our school has a beautiful and unique atmosphere, the students are amazing and the staff members are really caring. I fell in love with the school from day one – it’s a truly special place to learn and work. I feel privileged to be here.
Favourite things! What's your all-time favourite…
Book: The Book Thief by Markus Zusak
Poem: Funeral Blues by W.H Auden
Film: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, also Wizard of Oz and It’s a wonderful life
Story: From Luke’s gospel, the story of the prodigal son
Joke: My dad told me this joke when I was young. I laughed so much! Although it isn’t that funny now…
Why do surgeons wear masks? Because if they make a mistake you wouldn’t know who did it!
Recipe: Spicy parsnip and potato soup, as this was the first homemade soup I made.
Who inspires you? My beautiful, amazing, late father – he always made me feel like a million dollars and helped me to believe in myself. I also feel inspired by the St Mary’s School, Cambridge students – they’re amazing!
What’s your favourite hobby? Astronomy – I would challenge anybody to look at images from the Hubble telescope and not fall in love with the universe in all its glory.
What sort of music is your favourite? I love classical music, Beyoncé, U2 and Emile Sande.
What has been your favourite holiday so far? I went to India about 15 years ago which was incredible – I didn’t want to come home. I speak Punjabi, so that helped me to communicate well with the local people.
What’s your worst habit? I sing out loud when walking down the street or riding my bike. People look at me like I am crazy.
Team trivia: (without looking it up) do you know the only number which equals twice the sum of its digits? I had to think about this, but with a little thought and some scribbling I deduce it must be 18. 1 + 8 = 9, and 2 X 9 = 18. [correct answer from Mr Kelly]
