At St Mary's School we have a team of teaching and support staff who are dedicated to guiding students through their educational journey. They are high-qualified and enthusiastic.
Get to know some members of our team, by reading our light-hearted staff interviews below:
2nd in Charge, PE and games department
What was your favourite subject at school? Most definitely sport, although I did enjoy Geography too.
Why did you decide to teach PE? I have always wanted to be a PE teacher – or I have since I was 14 at least! I think sport can teach you an awful lot of things about yourself and help improve confidence, as well as the more obvious benefit of keeping fit.
Why did you decide to work at St Mary’s School, Cambridge? I applied for a job at St Mary's School, Cambridge initially because I really wanted to live and work in Cambridge – and I really enjoy being able to teach PE to girls from Year 3 to Upper Sixth. I also love taking the girls to fixtures and tournaments.
Favourite things - what's your all-time favourite…
Book: When the lion feeds by Wilbur Smith is one of my all-time favourite books as it is beautifully written and is about South Africa, which I think is a country worth writing about.
Poem: In Flanders Fields is a brilliant poem to remember the horror of war.
Film: If I am ever feeling sad I will watch Pirates of the Caribbean as Jack Sparrow cannot fail to make me smile.
Joke: knock knock jokes!
Recipe: my mum’s chilli con carne, without a doubt. For some reason, although she has taught me how to cook it, it is never as nice as when she makes it!
Who inspires you? My parents inspire me to do well. They are wonderful role models who have both demonstrated to me the value of hard work and determination. Usain Bolt also inspires me as he works hard to achieve his level of ability and is the quickest man alive!
What’s your favourite hobby? Playing hockey – I love running fast and hitting the ball as hard as I can. I also love walking my Working Cocker Spaniel, Myla, in the sunshine– she is so well behaved (most of the time)!
What is your favourite holiday destination? My favourite place to visit is Sivota, a tiny bay on the Island of Lefkas, in Greece. My dad has a yacht so I am lucky enough to be able to see some of the most beautiful areas of the Greek Islands.
What’s your worst habit? If I am nervous about something I always wait until the last minute to put my shoes on. In fact, I walked to school on my interview day without shoes on and put them on just before I went into the Cortile!
Team Trivia - (without looking it up) do you know which year the first FA Cup final was held at Wembley?Being a PE teacher I should know this… however football is not my forte! Having done A Level PE I did study the rationalisation of sport, so my guess is early 1900’s. Maybe 1910? [Close but not quite right, the answer is 1923]
