Head of Juniors

What was your favourite subject at school? German

When did you decide to become a teacher? I spent some time travelling the world, including living in both Japan and Germany, whilst working as an EFL teacher which was a wonderful experience. It became clear to me that teaching was the right career, and on returning to the UK I volunteered at my old primary school in Hertfordshire, further cementing the idea that I wanted to teach primary aged children.

Why did you decide to work at St Mary’s School, Cambridge? After I retrained in Cambridge to be a primary school teacher I was incredibly fussy about what type of school I wanted to work in, specifically searching for a small church school with a strong ethos at its core. Of course, St Mary’s School, Cambridge was the perfect fit! I felt at home as soon as I stepped through the door four years ago and I still feel a great sense of belonging to the school and the pupils. The school has a strong family feel due to most teachers having worked here for many years and also having sent their own daughters here – as I hope to do with my little girl once she is old enough!

Favourite things! What's your all-time favourite…
My favourite author is Haruki Murakami, he’s a fantastic Japanese writer. His books are surreal.
Book: My favourite Murakami book is ‘What I talk about when I talk about running’ which combines my two favourite hobbies - running and reading.
Music: I am a big fan of indie and folk music. I particularly like Noah and the Whale and Stornoway – I have seen Stornoway at The Junction several times but I don’t get to see as many bands as I would like to since my daughter came along! I enjoy finding new music to listen to using Spotify, and when I’m running I like listening to dance music.

What or who inspires you to do well? My family inspires me to do well. My wife is a great support and I feel driven to do well to support my wife and daughter.

Where has your favourite holiday been to? We go to our family’s holiday home in Normandy every summer and enjoy the French food and drink and the occasional hot day – Normandy being in the north of France! My most memorable holiday was to Australia with my parents when I was 11, it felt like an amazing adventure. It’s my dream to be able to go back with my own family.

What’s your worst habit? Restlessness probably! I find it difficult to sit still and relax, so teaching suits me very well! This also explains why my favourite hobby is running; it gets me out of the house and active. I am currently in training for my second London Marathon.

Team Trivia - without looking it up, can you name the capital city in Honduras? Tegucigalpa - but I’m not sure how to pronounce it! [correct answer from Mr O’Reilly]
