Our new Head Boarder, Maria K., introduces herself

My name is Maria K. and I am the current Head Boarder at St Mary’s School.

Boarding for me has been the most amazing experience, as I have been exposed to so many new cultures and people. Being part of the boarding community has enabled me to settle in easier and form a strong sense of sisterhood with many of my fellow boarders. I have met some of the most extraordinary and talented people in Mary Ward House and I have learnt so much from them (especially the boarders older than me). I have made friends that are compassionate and caring, whom I hope to keep for the rest of my life.

Additionally, I have been given many fantastic opportunities to develop and improve my leadership skills. The role of Head Boarder entails me being the representative of the boarding community – I should embody the houses’ characteristics as well as put forward the opinions and beliefs of all the boarders in the house. However, my favourite role is being seen as someone my fellow boarders can come to if ever in need of a chat or advice.

Often, I get a few boarders who tend to ask me about my subject choices, revision techniques, life advice; I love the fact that I can share what I have learnt from my past experiences to help others. Also as Head Boarder, along with the boarding prefects, I am occasionally responsible for organising a few enjoyable activities and events within the boarding house. For example, we organised the afternoon tea party for the residents of the Royal Albert Homes.
