Joining St Mary's School, Cambridge
Welcome! We hope that this section of our website will answer your key questions about our admissions process and policies but please feel free to contact us directly, using the contact details at the bottom of this page, with any other questions you may have.
Admissions - the basics
We look for students who are enthusiastic, have a desire to engage in the learning process, and who will immerse themselves fully in school life; taking part in extra-curricular activities, supporting the school’s ethos, and becoming an active member of the school community. We are concerned much more with the potential of each individual child’s gifts and passions than any achievements to date.
All girls wishing to join St Mary’s School, Cambridge undertake entrance assessments, but these assessments are designed to be appropriate to the age of the child and we endeavour to ensure that the process is as friendly and reassuring as possible. Places are offered based on a variety of equally important criteria including an individual interview with senior members of staff and references from previous schools (where appropriate).
There is one formal assessment day per year, but we offer the opportunity for students to sit entrance assessments on an ad hoc basis at other times of the year.
Girls from our Junior School will automatically transfer to the Senior School in Year 7 and girls from our Senior School will automatically transfer to the Sixth Form in Lower Sixth, unless the school has cause to believe that this will not be in the student’s best interest. In such cases, we will support parents in a timely fashion and in full consultation to find more appropriate alternative educational provision to suit your daughter’s needs.
For a brief introduction to St Mary's School, Cambridge and our ethos, download a copy of our prospectus. Alternatively, you can submit your questions by email to the team, or give them a call on +44 (0)1223 224167.
We encourage prospective families and girls to visit us and experience our warm and vibrant learning community for yourself. If you would like to arrange to visit and meet our Headmistress Ms Charlotte Avery or Head of Juniors Mr Matthew O’Reilly, and other members of our staff, please contact the admissions team for an individual appointment. Alternatively, you are warmly welcome at one of our Open Days, Taster Workshops or In Action days throughout the year – visit our ‘Arrange a visit’ page for further information.
When you are ready to apply please complete the application form and pay the application fee (£75)*. The form can be completed online or downloaded to submit by post or email via the link above. The application process typically begins at least 12 months prior to joining the school, although we are happy to consider applications later in the year as long as places are available in the relevant year group, and we do offer a waiting list if the year group in question is full.
The closing dates for applications from UK residents to join St Mary’s School, Cambridge in September 2018 are:
Junior School: Sunday 31 December 2017
Senior School: Sunday 31 December 2017
Sixth Form: Wednesday 15 November 2017.
There is no formal deadline for international applicants, nor for scholarship and bursary applications by international applicants – these will be considered by the Headmistress on the point of application.
*The £75 application fee is not refundable and is to process your daughter’s application. This fee should be paid when you submit the application form.
The next stage of the application process is to conduct formal and informal assessments; including tests and face-to-face interviews appropriate to the age of the student applying and her proposed year of entry. We want to understand each girl’s potential as much as her current levels of achievement, and so try to make the process as relaxed as possible.
Girls applying for places in Year 3 to Year 9 are invited to a pre-assessment tea prior to the formal assessment day, so the girls can become familiar with the environment and meet current as well as other prospective students before attending the assessment day. Please visit the assessments page for a detailed overview of the assessments taken at each point of entry.
At this stage we will also contact your daughter's previous school to request detailed references.
If your daughter accepts a place at the school, we require a deposit to be paid. For UK applicants the deposit is £500; for EU applicants the deposit is £1,000; outside of the EU the deposit is £5,000. This deposit will be returned to you at the end of your daughter’s time at the school. This deposit must be paid in addition to the school fees. Please see more information about fees here.
