Year 9 students showcase Physics, Engineering and Science projects

Year 9 students took the opportunity this week to showcase their independent project work to parents, staff and students at a Physics, Engineering and Science Fair held in the Sixth Form. Their work was the culmination of three weeks of hard work during physics lessons.

The students have been working in small teams on projects of their own choice from a range introduced during Science Week, researching and presenting data as detailed posters and practical demonstrations.

Projects varied from investigating and minimising heat loss from houses, the work of William Herschel on light waves and using UV light to measure the effectiveness of suncream, to designing an anti-theft alarm for Easter Eggs. All the displays were hugely informative and demonstrated how much fun can be engineered into the process too!

Other projects demonstrated the engineering challenges of a parachute jump from space and the effect of acid rain on plant growth. Each one involved the key steps of research, the planning and execution of a practical investigation, and presentation of methods, results and conclusions.
