St Mary’s students row to victory in the Cambridge Autumn Regatta

Two St Mary’s students are celebrating sporting triumph this week, after winning a doubles rowing race at the annual Cambridge Autumn Regatta. The race took place on Sunday 11 September on the River Cam.

Pupils, Eilidh H. and Anna T., both from Year 9, achieved first place in the Junior 14 Double rowing race. The Autumn Regatta is an annual event hosted by the Cambridge 99’ rowing club and open to all British rowing recognised clubs from across the country. 

Much thought was given as to whether the race would go ahead this year following the death of HRH Queen Elizabeth II. However, following advice from British Rowing and the Eastern Region Chair, the race went ahead as planned with some modifications, including a one-minute silence.  

The Autumn Regatta has been running for more than 40 years and is the only British Rowing recognised regatta in Cambridge. Starting at Ditton Meadow, Cambridge, this year’s regatta consisted of over 110 races over an eight-hour period. The course is a 550m sprint downstream on the River Cam from a stake boat start at the railway bridge, to the finish at Ditton Corner. The regatta drew in crowds from across the country, with in excess of 200 competitors participating, aged from 12 – 82 years old.
