Masterful Mrs Brown

Masterful Mrs Brown

Earlier this month, St Mary’s School, Cambridge’s Rowing Co-ordinator, Duke of Edinburgh Leader and long-standing member of the Mathematics department, Mrs Sue Brown, took part in the 2015 World Rowing Masters Regatta in Hazewinkel, Belgium.

The event runs for four days and competitions are split in to a range of age categories, from 27 through to the over 90’s, so completion is always available against crews of similar ages. Mrs Brown entered the D category single and double races, as well as the coxed IV and VIII. Having not competed at the top level for a while due to injury and health issues, Sue was delighted not to come in last in her field! Although on this occasion her teams didn’t earn any medals, remembering her love of racing Sue was delighted to be able to ‘empty the tank’ during each race, satisfied to cross the line knowing she couldn’t have given any more. As fast as many of the good British crews, Mrs Brown’s teams’ advances were hindered by some exceptional international crews, from all over Europe, Australia, the US, South America and Russia.

The ladies in the team have known each other for some 30 years and the ‘take home’ of the event was celebration of the fact that they are still fit and able to compete at such a high level. Well done to Mrs Brown, and we are certain that the love for rowing Sue exudes will be encouraging to the students she coaches.
