St Mary’s holds ‘Day of Reflection’ for Year 10 students

Year 10 students took part in a unique and inspiring ‘Day of Reflection’ on Thursday 25 January, which gave them the chance to take a break from the normal school timetable and work together in a non-classroom environment.

At St Mary’s we hold different Days of Reflection throughout the year for our Senior School students. Part of an ongoing initiative, this activity is designed to encourage students to think about their own lives and the wider world around them. The theme for Year 10 pupils this year was ‘Pilgrims together on life’s journey’ and included a range of fun games and activities.

Following a short introduction, the day began with a fun game of ‘Who am I?’ to get everyone warmed up. Throughout the day, students took part in various other activities. They spent time considering the qualities they bring to friendships and what elements of this they would like to develop further. They worked in small groups to discuss memorable places they have visited and any people they have met throughout their lives who hold great significance to them. There was also time for some quiet relaxation and prayer.

A highlight of the day was the screening of the powerful and moving 2010 film, The Way, which was played in three instalments throughout the day. The film follows the main character, Martin Sheen, who walks the Camino de Santiago – the famous pilgrimage route in France and Spain. Students then had the opportunity to reflect upon and discuss the film as a group.

One Year 10 student, Izzy A., reflected on the day:

"Days of reflection feel like a really unique opportunity to spend time with the rest of the year group and think about things you don't normally have time to consider. I really enjoyed all the activities we took part in and spending time with friends and the teaching staff. Days of reflection feel really unique to St Mary's as I didn't have them at my previous school, they are a really special day that we all look forward to taking part in."
