Year 6 explore their future at St Mary's Senior School

Year 6 explore their future at St Mary's Senior School

You are never too young to start thinking big, so with that in mind, our Careers Department was delighted to welcome our Junior School Year 6 girls into the Senior School to explore careers and ambitions and to find out what exciting ideas they already have about their futures.

The morning began with a discussion about aspirations, with ideas ranging from authors, scientists, chefs and lawyers to elite athletes and illustrators. The skills and qualities that help individuals become future-ready were also identified and promptly put into practice in a hands-on challenge.

By transforming something comfortably familiar - baking cookies - into a more in-depth task, Year 6 combined creativity and collaboration with attention to detail and time management. So engaged were they in the challenge that any initial nervousness about experiencing life in the Senior School was soon overcome.

Innovation and decision-making were baked into the process, as the girls explored how ingredients, packaging design and marketing contribute to a successful product before taking their delicious cookies home - a fitting reward for their excellent teamwork and entrepreneurial flair.

The girls concluded that their day had been a huge success:

"We enjoyed designing our own packaging and bringing our own ideas to life."

"We loved being in the Senior School, meeting the teachers and exploring the classrooms."

"We loved making something we could feel proud of and take home to show our families."

"Excellent." "Fun." "Amazing." "Great Experience!"

Kate Mead, Head of Future Skills, said:

" We hold this transition morning every autumn to help the girls familiarise themselves with the Senior School and it is always wonderful to see them embracing the challenge and working so creatively and confidently together."
