St Mary's School Wins Prestigious Stem Initiative of the Year Award
St Mary’s School is the winner of 'STEM Initiative of the Year', an award given by the prestigious Cambridge Independent Science & Technology Awards, with the judges recognising the strength and coherence of our provision from aged 3 through to 18.
At the heart of this success is the exceptional work taking place in the Junior School, where children begin developing computational thinking at the very same time as they learn to read, write and count. From Preschool onwards, our girls benefit from weekly lessons with our specialist Computer Science teacher, Mr Andrew Severy Severy, using a range of specialist equipment and programmable toys to learn how to break down problems, recognise patterns and think logically.
This early, carefully sequenced approach builds confidence and curiosity year on year, and its impact is evident in our sustained success in annual competitions such as the Bebras Computational Thinking Challenge, alongside achievements in robotics, coding and design, supported by learning in our inspiring Yingting Qian STEM Lab.
Crucially, this learning is not in isolation. The Junior School programme forms the foundation of a coherent STEM pathway that continues seamlessly into the Senior School, leading to outstanding GCSE and A Level outcomes and progression to leading universities and successful careers in STEM.
At St Mary's, no subject is considered 'just for the boys': we are proud to be inspiring the next generation of girls to see themselves as future scientists, technologists and engineers.
