Enrichment in the Senior School and Sixth Form

Enrichment in the Senior School and Sixth Form

Every other Friday afternoon all our students enjoy dedicated Enrichment Time. In Years 7,8 and 9 our students enjoy the opportunity to develop as artists, scientists, adventurers and citizens.

Our new look Enrichment curriculum from September 2020 has seen all students in Years 7-9, despite the challenges of Covid-19, following recognized award paths in Arts in Year 7, STEMM in Year 8 and Adventure (the Duke of Edinburgh’s Bronze Award) in Year 9.

In Year 10 students have had the opportunity to branch out and follow a variety of paths; for our athletes, there has been the Sports Award, for our scientists, engineers and mathematicians, the Bronze STEMM Award; for our musicians and actors devising of Covid-safe radio plays; for our adventurers, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Silver Award; and for those engaged with current affairs and the wider world, the BBC Young Reporters competition.

In the Sixth Form students have followed their own bespoke programme allowing them to develop the skills needed to be women of influence and global citizens of the future. Their exciting programme includes rowing, debating, the Duke of Edinburgh’s Gold Award, participation in MOOCs and the Drive IQ Award.

St Mary’s Enrichment programme makes ours a school filled with activity and creativity. We firmly believe that this different type of learning freed from the strictures of the curriculum or exam board specifications enables and empowers our students to experiment, to enquire, to collaborate, to persevere and to take risks.

Despite the challenges of Covid-19 and lockdown, St Mary’s girls have continued to show independence, creativity and empathy in their engagement outside of the classroom.

Looking ahead

We now look to the future with excitement; with plans for Year 10 students to study both GCSE short course PE and the Higher-Level Project Award (which enables students to devise and develop a research project on a topic of their choice). We are also developing innovative plans for all of our students to have greater access to outdoor learning.
