Funds raised by St Mary's girls help to transform educational opportunities for girls in Zimbabwe

As a Mary Ward School, St Mary's School, Cambridge is part of a global network of schools. Through our long-term partnership with a project in Mbizo, Zimbabwe we are helping to improve educational opportunities for girls in the area. This initiative will hit a significant landmark in early 2020, as a new Secondary School opens its doors to students for the first time.

Funds raised by our generous school community have made a significant contribution to the completion of this ambitious project, which builds on the success of the Mbizo Primary School project. From fun runs to non-uniform days and cake sales, our girls have shown both energy and creativity in raising funds totalling over £8000. Our most recent efforts have provided desks and chairs for the School - created by local industry in Zimbabwe - which are now in place, ready to be filled by keen students in the new year.

Fun run 2019From Junior School onwards, our Development Education programme enables girls to explore the relationship between global issues and their own everyday lives. The values that underpin this moral and social philosophy reflect our ethos as a Mary Ward School and open up age-appropriate ways for girls to learn and more importantly, engage with the world around them.

Our students are well aware of the barriers facing girls in other parts of the world, when it comes to accessing education - from poverty and hunger to unequal distribution of wealth and opportunity. Our education enables girls to develop the knowledge and skills they need to make sound decisions for a just and sustainable world in the future.

In every day school life, this leads to inspiring examples of our girls taking action on topics they feel passionate about, at both a global and local level. Recent examples include raising funds and awareness for charities including: Tom’s Trust, SENSE, Period Poverty and CARE International.
