Art scholars come top in Dunmow Flitch Trials Art Competition

Some of our Key Stage 3 art scholars entered original and imaginative artwork into the Dunmow Flitch Trials Art Competition. This is an art competition based on the historical events of Dunmow. The origin of the Dunmow Flitch dates back to 1104 and the Augustinian Priory of Little Dunmow, when the Lord of the Manor Reginald Fitzwalter and his wife dressed as humble folk and begged the blessing of the Prior a year and a day after marriage. The Prior, impressed by their devotion, bestowed upon them a 'Flitch of Bacon'. Fitzwalter gave his land to the Priory on the condition that a flitch should be awarded to any couple who could claim they were similarly devoted -- a tradition that has lasted to this day. The art competition, judged by two commercial artists, Terry Bryan and Andrea Hepworth, asked participants to create works based on anything related to the Dunmow Flitch Trials.

We are very pleased to announce that Temperance K. won the Flitch Trials Art Competition for Key Stage 3 with a sketch, while Mercedes K. was runner-up with a very innovative collage. The trophies and  prizes were awarded but Dunmow Town Mayor and their work will be featured in the local newspaper.
