Hockey in Holland (2018)

In October half term the U14 and U15 Holland Hockey Squads went to Valkenburgh, Holland to take part in advanced coaching sessions, matches against local Dutch teams, and a tournament to finish the week.

The purpose of the trip is to give the girls exposure to high standards of playing in order to motivate them, provide real challenges, and give them the chance to improve their skills, and to use the fantastic state of the art facilities on offer in Maastricht.

Both the Year 9 and the Year 10 squads enjoyed tough games and thoroughly exciting matches against their Dutch opponents, fighting hard throughout. Suffering a heavy defeat in the first fixture, the Year 10 girls’ spirits didn’t suffer, and they were able to fight back in their second fixture to have a closely fought second match; Year 9 girls fought hard in their first match against the Dutch with a nail biting second half the girls drew 1-1. Their second match was another well-matched game with the girls fighting all the way to the final whistle losing 0-1. At the end of the week the girls took part in a tournament playing all the English schools on the same trip.

On arrival in Holland the teams got to experience the Dutch way by drinking hot chocolate and cream on a street café in Valeknburgh. They also spent time at a retro-inspired bowling alley, sampling Dutch pancakes in the local pancake house, and of course an all-important trip to the lovely town of Maastricht as well as a well earnt disco to finish the week off in style!

At the end of the week each team awarded two girls for ‘player of the week’ - congratulations to Louisa P. from Year 10, and Lucy S. from Year 9. Very well done to all the girls.

A special thank you goes to Mrs Powell who came along to Holland as our Chief nurse in charge. The trip could not have happened without you.

County netball tournament

The U14 and U16 ESNA teams competed in the Cambridgeshire County Netball Tournament on Saturday 10 November at The Perse.

Both teams had closely fought matches against tough opposition throughout the day. The U16 team played 8 matches winning 5, drawing 1 and losing 2, resulting in them finishing 4th in competition.

The U14 team played 4 matches in the first round, winning all of them. The girls produced some excellent netball with consistent and accurate shooting from Maria. S (Yr9) and Georgie. D (Yr9). Finished top in their group they went on to play The Perse in the semi-final. The team pulled together and won the semi-final to proceed to the final. A place in the final also qualified the team for the East Regional finals. The girls had a hard match in the final against Stephen Perse and narrowly lost, meaning they are the U14 Cambridgeshire County Runners Up 2018.

District cross-country

On Tuesday 4 December, 18 girls from St Mary’s Senior School took part in the Cambridge District Schools Cross-Country Championships hosted at Netherhall School.

  • Year 7 girls ran 2.5km
  • Year 8 and 9 girls ran 3.4km
  • Year 10 and 11 girls ran 3.7km

The course was very muddy and consisted of a few hills. Despite the hills and a few tumbles due to the muddy conditions the girls continued to show strength, endurance and stamina all completing the race in the top 100 runners.

Oral. D (Year 7), Emma. A (Year 8), Kilda. M (Year 10) and Frankie. H (Year 11) all qualified for the next round. We wish all the girls who qualified the best of luck in their next race.
