Junior School Music teacher
What was your favourite subject at school? Music
How did you get in to teaching? I taught violin and voice privately during my Bachelor of Music studies and, once I had completed my degree, it felt quite natural to undergo teacher training so that I could teach classroom Music. I’ve always really enjoyed working with children.
Why did you decide to work at our Junior School? Once I moved from Australia to Cambridge in September 2015, an opportunity to work at a school such as this was very exciting to me. I thoroughly enjoy working with choirs, and being able to teach all of the girls in the Junior School is an extra bonus!
What’s your favourite thing about working at St Mary’s School, Cambridge? I have discovered many fantastic things about working here but something that is already topping the list is the talented pupils in Year 3 and Year 4, who are enjoying the new recorder karate programme; the girls are flying through the songs, it’s wonderful!
Favourite things! What's your all-time favourite…
Book: Pride and Prejudice by Jane Austen
Poem: Shakespeare’s Sonnet 18
Film: About Time
Story: Alice in Wonderland
Joke: Anything by Dawn French – or even the entire Vicar of Dibley series!
Recipe: I just made lamingtons for Australia Day which were pretty delicious, and I do have a very good recipe for a lemon tart that I make almost every month
Hobby: I really enjoy being creative so I enjoy crochet, knitting and writing music.
Who inspires you? My mum is very inspiring, I learn a lot from her every day.
What sort of music is your favourite? I love classical music; my favourite composers are Debussy, John Cage and JS Bach. Within more modern music I enjoy some Ed Sheeran songs, and I’ve recently been listening to Ain’t nobody by Felix Jaehn on repeat.
Where has been your favourite holiday? I recently went travelling around the US for two months and I loved my time in New Orleans, Louisiana. It was such an interesting city with delicious and unique food as well as many evenings filled with Jazz music.
What’s your worst habit? Trying to achieve too much – I always want to spend more time on tasks!
Team trivia: (without looking it up) for his part in which 1953 film did Frank Sinatra receive a Best Supporting Actor Oscar? I'm not confident, so I'm going to go with Guys and Dolls. [Incorrect, Miss Hickey! The right answer is From here to eternity.]
