Year 7 learn about rivers and water cycles at the Epping Forest Field Study Centre

All Year 7 enjoyed glorious weather for their day at Epping Forest Field Study Centre. The morning was spent in the woods looking at the catchment of the river and finding its source. They also investigated the water cycle so they could better understand how water moved down, and laterally through the ground to keep rivers flowing even when it wasn’t raining!

The woods were leafy and green with new growth and the was lots of load birdsong! In the afternoon the students carried out a river survey on Debden Brook to see how it changed as it flowed downstream. They worked in small groups to measure width, depth, velocity, pebble shape and size.

They were able to use Bradshaws Model of downstream changes to develop hypotheses about what the river should do and they will spend time back at School presenting and analysing their results to see if Debden Brook has behaved as theory says it should!
