Curriculum

Skilled teaching in small classes is at the heart of our approach to learning. Emphasis is placed on the core skills of reading, writing and the understanding of mathematical concepts. The National Curriculum is incorporated into the school’s own programmes of study.

All classes are taught by primary specialists. This teaching is supplemented by specialist teaching in creative arts (including Dance and Music), Modern Foreign Languages, Science, Information Communication Technology (ICT) and PE. Some of these specialist teachers are shared with St Mary’s Senior School, making the eventual transition to the Senior School even more seamless.

Religious Education

High priority is given to the spiritual and moral development of our children and as a Catholic foundation, Religious Education is central to the St Mary’s curriculum. The teaching of Catholicism is combined with that of other world religions, encouraging an understanding of many faiths.

Individual Needs

A single–sex education, with small classes, creates a focussed learning environment where girls can be given individual attention and differentiated work, so that each child can work to her own level of ability. For the more able child, or any child who needs additional help from time to time, an extensive support timetable is offered. This is further facilitated by the use of small group designated study areas, which allow for private study with support teachers away from the classroom.

Extra–Curricular

The curriculum is supported by extra–curricular activities and after school care, in the form of Homework, Late Stay or Twilight clubs.
