Book Week Readathon

Junior School girls were presented with a certificate this week from the Malcolm Sargent Cancer Care for Children and The Roald Dahl Foundation, thanking the Junior School for donating a huge £1339.52 from their Book Week Readathon.

Easter Egg Hunt

Junior School Easter Egg Hunt

All St Mary's Junior School girls took part in an Easter Egg Hunt and Jar Bar in the run up to the Easter holidays, organised by the junior school PTA.

All girls joined in the Jar Bar, by donating a jar or pot of sweets and chocolates and paying £1 to choose another treat brought in by one of the other Junior School girls. They also hunted in the garden to find the hidden sticks, three of which were necessary to earn an Easter egg! Read more...(pdf 96k)

Junior School's Food Science Week!

Ready, Bread-y,Go!

St Mary's Junior School pupils started off their very own Science Week with a series of activities focussing on food. All of the Junior School classes took part in a science investigation into food, from the BA (British Association for the Advancement of Science) Food for Thought Challenge Pack. Investigations included 'Crazy Custard' and 'Dancing Food,' as well as 'Ready, Bread-y, Go' which involved the pupils making four different amounts of bread dough, each with a different amount of yeast to see the effects! Reception at the Ballet

Reception Class at the Ballet

This week the Reception class visited Cambridge Corn Exchange to watch the highly popular children's book character, Angelina Ballerina perform a live ballet of 'Sleeping Beauty'.

The Angelina Ballerina stories follow the adventures of Angelina, a mouse who dreams of becoming a prima ballerina! The Reception class thoroughly enjoyed their trip and you can read some of their comments here...(pdf 81k)

Form 3 Visit Welney

Form 3 Visit Welney

Form 3 girls visited Welney Wetland Centre near Wisbech in February as part of their Science studies.

The pupils were looking at adaptation and migration of birds, particularly the Whooper swans from Iceland . The girls also saw Bewick swans whilst there, and took part in the Swan feed.

Form 5 RSPB Birdwatch

RSPB Birdwatch

Just before the end of term the year 5 pupils took part in the in the RSPB's National Big Schools' Bird Watch.

A representative from the RSPB, Malcolm Busby, who is also a Milton Country Park ranger, visited Mrs Farmer's Year 5 class to join in with their bird-watching activities and point out different species. Read more...(pdf 71k)

Junior School Book Week

The Junior School pupils recently took part in their annual Book Week. Reception, Key stage 1 and 2 classes were all treated to a visit from Paula Metcalf, a local author and illustrator and artist in residence at the Roald Dahl Museum.

The Key Stage 2 girls were also visited by Anthony Pedley, who gave the pupils a dramatic rendition of Roald Dahl’s works. In addition, all the girls dressed up as their favourite book characters on Thursday, with donations going to CLIC Sargent Cancer Care for Children. Read more...(pdf 57k)

Hundertwasser Pots

 

In Year 6 we have been studying the Austrian artist Friedrich Hundertwasser. He died in the year 2000 so is quite a contemporary artist. Much of his work is very bright and concerned with buildings and architecture.

We have designed and made clay pots in the form of a tower. First we designed the basic shapes and made them in clay. Our decorations were etched onto the outside after we thought about a theme linked with a traditional fairytale. Read more...(pdf 44k)

Form 4's Viking DayForm 4's Viking Day

 

 

On Thursday 17th January, Forms 4K and 4S dressed up as Viking children and took part in a Viking Day. We were visited by some friendly Vikings, Thorulf Hammerson and his wife Gudrid, who entertained us with stories and historical facts about Viking times. Form 2 got to meet all sorts of reptiles, including snakes, lizards, chameleons and tortoises, at their Reptile Experience. 'Today I learnt that the white tree frog could change colour so if it stayed under a log it would change from green to brown.' Read more...(pdf 56k)

The 10th October saw the Form 6 girls enjoying a great day learning about the Second World War while in role as evacuees. They were all allocated names and identities of children from the War years, some of whom were actually on the register at Stibbington in 1939.Read more...(pdf 52k)

 

Form 3 Visit to Audley End House

Year 3 Visit to Audley End 2007

 

Form 3 visited Audley End House, near Saffron Walden, in September. We were greeted by 'Mrs Warwick', the housekeeper. All of the children came dressed as Victorians for the visit and took on roles as servants. Form 5 visited Lavenham as an introduction to their CDT project this term, which is to design and make a Tudor house.

Sketching Tudor houses at Lavenham

 

Lavenham is a medieval wool town in Suffolk and most of the timbered houses were built between 1450 and 1500. They spent some time sketching Tudor houses and visited the Guildhall of Corpus Christi.
