Guardians

All international students at St Mary’s need an educational guardian. If you are a homestay student, your guardian will often be a member of your homestay family, though this is not always the case. Your guardian may be a relative or a family friend, or you may choose to use the services of an outside agency to help you find a guardian. However, we highly recommend our own St Mary’s Guardian Services, details of which are given below:

St Mary’s Guardian Services

  • We select, monitor and check our guardians carefully, ensuring that they can provide a very high level of care and support at all times for you and a welcoming home at exeat weekends and half–term holidays (where the educational guardian cannot provide accommodation, the school will make separate homestay arrangements for you with a host family)
  • We encourage our guardians to take a personal interest in your academic progress and your personal achievements
  • We aim to ensure that your relationship with your guardian is a successful and happy experience that contributes to your all–round development
  • We aim to provide your parents with the assurance and peace of mind that you are experiencing the very highest level of pastoral care, both in school and out

The School will perform all the checks necessary including Criminal Records Bureau (CRB) checks on all adult members of the Educational Guardian’s household (and Homestay households where different). Such CRB checks will be repeated as required by the CRB.

Your St Mary’s–organised Guardian will:

  • Attend the annual parents’ evening and report back to your parents
  • If required, help to organise your travel arrangements for the beginning and end of term, exeat weekends and half–term holidays
  • If required, help you to organise your visa, police registration, travel card, bank account, etc.
  • Provide storage during the summer holidays for any items you do not wish to take home
  • Respect your cultural and religious background
  • Maintain regular contact with you and the school and help to address any concerns or issues that may arise
  • Provide a channel of communication between the school and your parents
  • Provide a 24/7 contact number for use by your parents or the school in the event of an emergency
  • Provide accommodation and emergency care in the event of the school being closed (due to illness, bad weather, etc.) or if you have been suspended, required to leave, or have been taken ill
