Transport to school

For visitors’ directions to the school, and public transport routes, please click here.

Greater Anglia offers Scholar Season Tickets to our students, which entitles them to a discount on rail travel to and from school.

In addition to the public transport routes, we operate a free minibus service from the Trumpington Park and Ride car park every morning and evening for students, and there is also a free minibus service between the Junior School and Senior School to assist families with students at each site. This service is subject to availability and is on a first come first served basis. Please contact our Admissions Officer, Tina Shannon on +44 (0)1223 224 167 or admissions@stmaryscambridge.co.uk, to register your interest.

Trumpington Road roadworks

From January 2017 to May 2017 work is being undertaken to improve the footpaths and cycle routes on Trumpington Road – the only route into the Junior School on Chaucer Road, and one of the main routes to access the Senior School and Sixth Form – to create new facilities between The Fen Causeway and Brooklands Avenue, adjacent to the Cambridge University Botanic Garden.

We anticipate some additional delays being caused, especially during rush hour, with the route being subjected to two way traffic management, and we also anticipate parking difficulties arising as some bays will be lost temporarily (as well as some being lost from the location permanently).

Footway closure

The footway alongside the Cambridge University Botanic Garden will be closed from Monday 30 January until mid-April to allow for its widening and reconstruction. Pedestrians and cyclists will be diverted to the shared-use foot and cycleway on the opposite side via existing crossings. This will affect students traveling to the Senior School and Sixth Form but should not add any substantial amount of time to the walk into/home from school.

Trumpington Road/Bateman Street junction

The road here is narrower in places, meaning that temporary traffic lights will be needed at certain times to allow for safe working. This will be limited to off-peak hours (9.30am to 3.30pm). The junction with Bateman Street might also need to be closed for some of the time, in which case a diversion route via Brooklands Avenue and Hills Road will be in place. This will add additional travel time, especially for those driving to the Senior School and Sixth Form.

Parking bays opposite Cambridge University Botanic Garden

From week commencing 30 January until mid-March the parking bays opposite the Botanic Garden will need to be closed. This will allow two-way traffic to be maintained on the road. The work area needs to be extended to the centre of the road to allow for safe working.

Brooklands Avenue closure

During weeks commencing 30 January and 6 February, vehicles travelling down Trumpington Road ‘outbound’ (with Bateman Street and then Brooklands Avenue on the left), will not be able to use the left turn lane to enter Brooklands Avenue (to access Mary Ward House), as it will be closed at certain times to allow new kerbs to be installed. Cars will still be able to turn into Brooklands Avenue, at all times, but larger vehicles will be diverted via Long Road when the left turn lane is closed.

Junior School drop-off/collection

We are aware that a number of Junior School families use the Trumpington Road parking bays at drop-off and collection times to then walk down to the Junior School. We have arranged for a temporary drop-off area to be created on Chaucer Road to help parents when bringing children to school. Cones and a sign will be used to highlight the relevant area for parents to use, which will be near Chaucer Close – please click here to view a map showing the area to be used

We have received enquiries from parents at the Junior School about the possibility of dropping children off earlier than usual to allow families to get ahead of the rush hour traffic. Families of Junior School pupils are reminded of the Breakfast Club which runs each day from 7.15am to 8.00am, at which breakfast and supervision are available for £6 per session. Please contact the Junior School office for further information about the club or feel free to drop your daughter off from tomorrow morning.

Senior School drop-off

Families of Senior School students hoping to miss the morning rush hour are reminded that their daughters are welcomed into school from 7.30am before the official start of the school day at 8.15am. Students may arrive before 8.15am only if their parents have completed an early arrival form and this is given to the Reception team - to download a copy of the early arrival form please click here. Students must arrive via the Senior School entrance on Bateman Street where they will be asked to sign in. For students arriving early breakfast consisting of a croissant and juice is available for £1 and should be eaten in the dining room.
