Weekly Boarding

Relaxing with Mrs Hannaford, Pastoral Head of Boarding
As a weekly boarder, you will come into school on a Sunday night (7–9 pm) or Monday morning and return home on Friday afternoons (4.15 pm).
Weekly boarding is an attractive option for many parents, especially working parents who have difficulties with the timing of the daily school collection. Saving time on the school run or journeys to and from extra–curricular activities is a real bonus, especially when you know that your daughter is safe and happy and able to take advantage of the school’s extensive facilities. For many parents, boarding also makes economic sense when the cost of travel, food, leisure activities and childcare is taken into account.
“It is almost better than being at home all week because it is like a big sleep–over with all your friends. Of course I miss my Mum and Dad sometimes but I see them at weekends. I looked around lots of other boarding schools and chose this one and I think I chose the best.” Year 7 boarder
What do I need to bring with me?
In addition to items on the uniform and equipment list, you will need to bring the following items with you :
- duvet
- duvet cover
- towels
- personal toiletries (e.g. soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo etc.)
- casual clothes for evenings
- slippers
- underwear
- all items of school uniform which cannot be purchased through the school (you will be given a list)
- a small amount of pocket money for personal use
Please make sure that all your clothing and belongings are clearly labelled. There are no laundry facilities for weekly boarders so all your washing must be taken home. It is your responsibility to look after your personal items (e.g. camera, jewellery, mobile phone etc.). Year 11 and Sixth Form boarders have lockable cupboards in their study bedrooms.
“I first came to St Mary’s when I was in Year 7. I am a weekly boarder and enjoy life at St Mary’s very much. Being a weekly boarder I feel that I can learn about the different cultures of people that have come from the other side of the world. I keep in touch with friends at home and see them often. Boarding has changed my attitude towards life because I am an only child. I never really had the chance to share, but being in a room with two other girls has given me the opportunity. I feel I am more independent being a boarder because I no longer rely on my parents all the time. St Mary’s is a really homely and loving place and I enjoy it very much.” Year 10 boarder
