Boarding

Meet the Boarding Team!

Pastoral Head of Boarding

Mrs Kay Wayman

I joined St Mary’s in 1986, having been appointed by Sister Christina, the last IBVM Head. I was one of the first lay house staff to be employed and I took charge of the health and pastoral care of the weekly boarders as well as responsibility for first aid for the whole school. I have always worked within the caring profession since leaving college where I completed a two–year Residential Care course. I have continued my studies whilst at St Mary’s and have obtained the Boarding Schools Association qualification. I enjoy my work immensely. It is very satisfying to see our students blossom and flourish during their time with us.

Mrs Angela Donald

I joined St Mary’s in September 2006 to fill a newly created position of Housemother at 25 Bateman Street, a boarding house annexe for 6th Form girls. As its name implies, my role is to create a ‘home from home’ for the seven girls resident here, ensuring that all their needs are met.

An Infant teacher by profession, I have worked as a Houseparent and a Matron in previous boarding schools, where I have attended a variety of relevant training programmes.

A keen bridge player, I would love to teach the girls to play, in addition to improving their culinary skills — another of my interests. I belong to a book club and am attending a creative writing course.

Biggles: top cat!

I have been at St Mary’s since 2004 and I am in overall charge of the boarding house. I keep a close eye on things during the day to ensure that all runs smoothly but my main duties begin at 4pm during the week, just as the school day ends. I spring into action and patrol the corridors, ready to greet the boarders as they return to their rooms. My responsibilities at this time are to listen to their chatter and concerns, to allow them to pet and fuss over me, and to help them to settle down into family life at St Mary’s. I am a counsellor and friend to everyone. My main off–duty interests are sleeping and eating. I am quite a fussy eater but I have managed to charm Sylvia and the kitchen staff into reserving the choicest cuts of chicken and beef for me. Although I am not on the official payroll, the Bursar kindly covers the cost of my board and lodging, including 5* accommodation during exeat weekends and holidays. This is extremely generous of him, but even the most exclusive hotel isn’t quite like home, so please note that I am always open to offers from those who enjoy entertaining house guests.

Lola: see how smart I am!

I have been at St Mary’s since 2003 and I work closely with the Bursar in my role as the Boarding House Security Officer. I am a chihuahua and with my huge ears and eyes, I am hyper–sensitive and alert to any noise within the boarding house at night. I am also very brave and am prepared to challenge the largest Dobermann! I recognise most people (including the Headmistress, the Bursar, other boarding staff and many of the girls) by their footsteps alone so I always know who is around. As I am on night duty, I tend to sleep rather late, but my daily treat of 3 white chocolate raisins is usually enough to get me going each morning. After that, I enjoy playing with my plastic chicken or watching football on TV (though I never seem able to catch the ball no matter how fast I run behind the TV to look for it). Despite my size I can walk for miles and love exploring Coe Fen or going shopping in Cambridge Market. Best of all is visiting my doggy friend Lily — I met Lily at the St Mary’s Dog Show and will be spending a week with her over Easter. However, I really come to life during the evening when the girls come to visit me; they are a friendly and happy group and we all have a lot of fun together. My dearest wish is that one day I will have a boyfriend but unfortunately this is not possible in a girls’ boarding house.
