Full Boarding
“The boarding house has been like a second family to me.” Sixth Form Boarder

International boarders enjoying the snow
As a full boarder, you will enjoy the warm family atmosphere of our community and be resident at school throughout the term, with the exception of the two official weekend exeats per term when the school will be closed. In addition, you may opt to go out on other weekends or for day exeats, by arrangement with the Housemistress.
What do I need to bring with me?
In addition to items on the uniform and equipment list, you will need to bring the following items with you :
- personal toiletries (e.g. soap, toothbrush, toothpaste, shampoo etc.)
- casual clothes for evenings and weekends
- slippers
- underwear
- all items of school uniform which cannot be purchased through the school (you will be given a list)
- pocket money
Please make sure that all your clothing and belongings are clearly labelled. When you arrive at school you should give your passport, air tickets and money to the Housemistress for safe keeping. It is your responsibility to look after your personal items (e.g. camera, jewellery, mobile phone etc.). Year 11 and Sixth Form boarders have lockable cupboards in their study bedrooms.
“It was a daunting and challenging experience to leave my parents and come to England to pursue my studies. In the first couple of weeks I was scared, frustrated and homesick, but the teachers and students at St Mary’s are very nice and friendly and soon helped me to settle in. The School is not huge and provides a peaceful and cosy environment for students. Boarding in the School has taught me how to get on with people of different cultural backgrounds and of different characters. It is important to live in harmony because we are here to help and support each other. I have also learnt to look after myself when it comes to organising my studies, tidying my room, doing my own laundry, planning how to use my money, etc., which will certainly help me in my future life. In a nutshell, I have gained and developed a lot over the year and I am glad that my parents have given me the opportunity. Therefore,I strongly encourage people to study abroad — it may be costly, but it is worthwhile after all.” Deputy Head Boarder (from China)
Exeat weekends and half–term holidays
Each term, there are two exeat weekends and a half–term holiday. The school closes at these times. Full boarders can either return home or stay with a family in the UK. The school can organise a homestay family for you if you like.
