About St Mary’s

Within the UK

The Geography Department and Sixth Formers stay at Sheringham Youth Hostel, Norfolk, for a weekend in order to study coastal processes, landforms and management. As an essential part of their GCSE coursework in Geography, Year 10 students spend four days in North Wales measuring the rate of flow of the River Conway, visiting power stations and wind farms. For the May Bank Holiday weekend, the Geography Department travel to Dorset with Year 9 students who have the opportunity to study landscape, settlement and some History.

At the end of the summer term, A Level biologists undertake a study of ecological sampling techniques at Grafham Water Nature Reserve. This is a three day non-residential course involving travel by school minibus each day.

The Duke of Edinburgh’s Award Scheme is highly regarded by employers and universities alike and St Mary’s probably has more participants than any other Cambridgeshire school. Expeditions are an integral part of the award, being one of four sections (five at Gold) that must be completed. Practice expeditions on the Suffolk coast are followed by the assessment. Bronze expeditions near Ely last for 2 days (1 night), Silver on the Suffolk coast for 3 days (2 nights) and Gold in wild country for 4 days (3 nights).
