Teacher of Biology
What was your favourite subject at school? Biology (unsurprisingly) and Chemistry, and English Literature, because I loved my teacher.
Why did you decide to become a teacher? I'd always thought about teaching as a possible career option when applying to university, then during my third year at Loughborough University I thought more seriously about it, and applied for a place on a PGCE course, which I undertook and really enjoyed.
How did you come to work at St Mary’s School, Cambridge, and what’s your favourite thing about the school? In February this year my partner was offered a job in Cambridge, so I applied to the school and we moved to the area. I had been teaching at a boys’ grammar school for the past five years, and now I'm really enjoying teaching girls, and living in such an exciting city. Since working at St Mary's School, Cambridge for just a few months, everyone has been so supportive and friendly. It's a lovely environment to work in where everyone is very respectful.
Favourite things! What's your all-time favourite…
Recipe: Avocado Smash - avocado mashed with feta cheese and tomato, served on sourdough bread, with a runny poached egg on the top. Perfect for breakfast, lunch or dinner!
Book: A Thousand Splendid Suns, by Khaled Hosseini, because it makes me think beyond the confines of my own life.
Film: One Day (also a fantastic book by David Nicholls, which I read this summer).
Quote: “Always make time for the things and the people who are important to you” is one my grandma always says, and “For every minute you're angry you lose 60 seconds of happiness” by Ralph Waldo Emerson.
Who inspires you to do well? My grandparents have always been really inspirational and encouraged me to work hard, and try my best at everything.
What are your favourite hobbies? Going to the theatre, cycling, and running (including the Cambridge Town & Gown 10km run which I ran with colleagues in October, raising money for Muscular Dystrophy campaign).
Who are your favourite bands? Florence and the Machine, Mumford and Sons, Ben Howard, The Lumineers, Jack Penate and Vampire Weekend - all of which I've seen play live.
Where has your best holiday ever been? When I travelled over-land from Singapore to Bangkok, through Malaysia and learnt to dive while I was in Thailand.
What’s your worst habit? Picking my fingers when I'm stressed!
Team Trivia - Can you name the book this quote is the opening line for? "It is a truth universally acknowledged that a single man in possession of a good fortune, must be in want of a wife." Not without looking it up on Google! [The correct answer is: Jane Austen’s Pride and Prejudice]
