At St Mary's School we have a team of teaching and support staff who are dedicated to guiding students through their educational journey. They are high-qualified and enthusiastic.
Get to know some members of our team, by reading our light-hearted staff interviews below:
Joint Head of Year 9 and teacher of Geography
What was your favourite subject at school? PE, Geography and Biology
How did you get in to teaching? I always thought that I was too shy to be a teacher but I went to work at PGL (an adventure holiday company for children – I don’t think PGL stands for anything!) in my university summer breaks and progressed from Domestic Assistant role to Group Leader during my time there. I loved it and realised how much fun it is to be around children; I didn’t see it as work, but a lot of fun.
Why did you decide to work at St Mary’s School, Cambridge? I was fortunate to go to this school myself and I have such fond memories of my school days. I was so lucky that a year-long maternity cover role became available for a year just as I was returning to work after having my two boys. I was even luckier that I was then able to stay permanently as I would have been very sad to leave. Being here brings back so many fond memories.
What’s your favourite thing about working at this school? I smile every day because of so many of the people here. The girls and the staff are amazing and it really feels like being part of a family. The Geography department and my Heads of Year colleagues especially make every day so enjoyable.
Favourite things! What's your all-time favourite…
Poem: Winnie the Pooh, Us two
Film: Watership Down
Joke: I can never remember any…
Who inspires you? My Grandmother, as she was always so cheerful, loving and hardworking even though she had a hard time being a single mother. My father is also the kindest man, and taught me to treat people well and to work hard.
What’s your favourite hobby? I love running outside in the country on my own listening to music. I have run the London Marathon and five half marathons, but prefer not having to time myself as I hate being slower as I get older!
Do you have a favourite band? I love a wide range of music – but Coldplay, Kodaline and Passenger are a couple of my favourites. I love going to festivals like ‘Latitude’ where you can listen to such a broad range at once.
Where has your favourite holiday ever been? Cornwall and Corsica – they are both so beautiful and I love going to places where you can be active and sail or surf.
What’s your worst habit? Worrying too much – it gets annoying for other people!
Team trivia: (without looking it up) which months of the year were added to the calendar to make 12 months, from 10? I don’t know, but will guess February and June! [Partly right, Mrs Hutchinson – January and February were added, as the winter season previously had no months attributed]
