About St Mary’s

Headmistress’s Letter: 17 February 2006

Dear Parents of Pupils at St Catherine’s,

The Governors of St Mary’s School and the Directors of St Catherine’s School are delighted to announce that, with effect from 17 February 2006, St Mary’s School will take on responsibility for St Catherine’s School. The new school will be known as St. Mary’s Junior School. Mrs Deirdre O'Sullivan will be the Headmistress of St Mary’s Junior School with immediate effect. For the remainder of this academic year, the school will continue with its teaching programme unchanged.

You will be aware that in September, St Mary’s was due to start its own junior school. The vision for this school is to offer a Catholic, caring school with the added benefits of sharing facilities and teachers with the Senior School. In this way we intend to enhance the learning of certain specialist subjects such as languages, ICT, science, music, art and PE and to make the transition to the Senior School as seamless as possible. We will now be able to offer the benefits of a fully integrated school for girls aged from 4 to 18 to all the pupils presently studying at St Catherine’s School from September 2006. The use of No 1, Brookside and No 2, Brookside will enable us to cater for the current St Catherine’s pupils together with new pupils. We will now have the huge benefits of the experience of a successful teaching staff and established community of pupils from St Catherine’s to take with us.

No one underestimates how difficult the last few months have been for everyone at St Catherine’s: parents, pupils and staff. For several weeks the Governors of St Mary’s have been working with the Directors of St Catherine’s to help secure the long term future of the school in the best possible way for everyone. We recognise that the uncertainty felt by the parents will not go away overnight and we will aim to give you as much information as possible over the next few weeks. Both Headmistresses will be available on Monday 20 February all morning to answer your questions and Information Mornings will continue at St Mary’s to explain any changes taking place from September 2006. The Information Mornings for St Catherine’s Parents will be held at St Mary’s on 28 February, 1 March, 6 March and 8 March. If you wish to attend an Information Morning, please ring our Admissions Department on 01223 224126.

From today St Mary’s is honoured to be able to take on the responsibility for the education of younger pupils again. We will be having a Mass at St Mary’s very soon for parents and pupils of St Catherine’s to celebrate the coming together of the two Catholic independent schools in Cambridge.

Yours sincerely
