The Elms
The Elms

1898

  •  IBVM House founded in Cambridge at Furness Lodge (Parker’s Piece).
  •  School opened during the Autumn.

1904

  •  School moves to The Elms.

1909

  •  Paston House purchased and becomes a day school.
  •  The Elms is a boarding school.

Regulations issued from York in 1909:

  1. Unless through necessity, no sister is to go into the town. Only very necessary shopping to be done by the nuns.
  2. No one is to visit at any house either in the town or country, except when she requires to see a dentist or doctor.
  3. No sister is to be out, even at a lecture, after dark. Should any special case make attendance at a lecture necessary, there should be a cab back.
  4. There is to be no driving in motor cars or taxi-cabs at present.
  5. No sister is to stop to speak in the streets or church porch.
  6. There is leave to talk in the country, but talking in the streets is not allowed.

1917

  •  Sister Paul, Headmistress 1917–1949.

1924

  •  First school inspection: the school was recognised as ‘efficient’.
  •  135 pupils in the school altogether (there was no Sixth Form at this time).

1929

  •  ‘Crush’s’ link block is built.
