Year 13 physicists were given an invaluable insight into fusion energy on a visit to the Culham Centre for Fusion Energy (CCFE) in Oxfordshire.
The group were privy to guided tours and talks by scientists and engineers working at the centre. They were taken around the innovative MAST (Mega Amp Spherical Tokamak) experiment which is part of the UK fusion programme. The second tour visited the JET (joint European Torus) fusion experiment. The JET experiment is the world’s largest magnetic fusion experiment, which the CCFE hosts on behalf of its European partners.
CCFE is the UK’s national laboratory for fusion research, making many contributions to international fusion research and development.
The trip formed a valuable part of the students A-level course and helped to enhance their understanding of their work covered.
