St Mary’s was delighted to welcome Dr Julie Smith from Robinson College to give a talk to girls entitled Visions, Values, People or Power? Why go in to Politics?
Dr Smith talked to girls from Years 7 to 13 about her demanding career as an academic and Liberal Democrat councillor for Newnham. She was frank about her role and her own education at Merchant Taylors' and Oxford.
The lunch time talk covered Dr Smith’s early fascination with politics and the processes involved in involvement and election. Girls from all ages posed a range of challenging questions to their visitor on topics such as tuition fees and the possible outcome over the next few years. The girls' questions reflected their political awareness and curiosity.
