Two St Mary’s students have been awarded prizes for their creative writing in The Lighthouse Festival Awards.
Anna C and Isobel Z were presented their awards by Poet Laureate Carol Ann Duffy who praised the maturity of their essays and encouraged them to keep writing.
The creative writing competition asked entrants to explore the idea of ‘A Space of my Own’. Carol Ann Duffy commented that she had admired the frequent resonance of Woolf in the work submitted and admitted that she had been surprised at the sophistication of language and ideas.
As first prize winner in the year 10 and 11 class, Anna read her essay and transported all who listened to Aldeburgh beach to share her experiences on the shingle.
Carol Ann Duffy spoke of the importance of creative expression for the young and her excitement in discovering the next generation of novelists and poets as she read work submitted for the competitions which she has initiated.
