Students start thinking about climate change

Posted in: Latest News

Students from across the senior school gathered in the library to listen to an inspirational talk from Dr Victoria Cadman, entitled Thinking about climate change.

Dr Cadman, Executive Director at the Ecological Continuity Trust, talked to attendees about her trip to the Arctic Circle where she and her team attempted to reconstruct what the climate used to be like. Many students were shocked to hear that 100 million years ago the Antarctic wasn’t snowy, icy and sub-zero temperatures but a tropical paradise full of biodiversity.

The girls were stunned by impressive pictures from Victoria’s personal experiences including astonishing pictures of glaciers. The most beneficial and valuable piece of information that she passed on was that humans alone do not affect what is happening to our environment, and our actions are mere interruptions in the natural cycle of change.

Victoria F, Year 10, commented: “Everyone who attended the talk would agree with me in saying that we never thought climate change could be so inspirational or that we could learn so much in such a short amount of time. In addition it has tempted many of us into the male dominated job area, as women, proved by Victoria Cadman, can succeed in it too”
