Students hone their engineering skills

Year 8 students honed their engineering skills at a hands-on workshop learning how to build a bridge as part of their science lesson.

The morning’s activities demonstrated how engineers use science in their everyday work - to enthuse the girls who could be our future scientists and engineers. The classes were able to design their own bridge using the latest computer package based on those used by Civil Engineers. The girls’ virtual bridges are tested to see if their structures would be safe in reality.

They put all this knowledge into practice as they built an engineering model of a bridge.

The activity was run by the Science and Engineering Ambassadors from the STEM Team Cambridgeshire. Students also received a short careers talk from the Ambassadors about their careers as engineers - all three Ambassadors last year were women.
