Dr Sally-Ann Ashton from the Fitzwilliam Museum visited St Mary’s to give a talk to students entitled Headrests, Hair combs and Black Youth Culture.
More than 50 Year 8 and 9 pupils attended the event, which was held in the School Library. The talk covered the importance of hair in African culture, with pictures of an Egyptian drawing of a hair-dressing scene from thousands of years ago.
Moving on to black youth culture, Dr Ashton discussed her role as Education Officer and Mentor in prison and explained about the problems young black men face and why she thinks these problems arise.
Dr Sally-Ann Ashton will be displaying an exhibition of hair combs and headrests at the Fitzwilliam Museum, running from October to January. The attending students concluded that the exhibition would definitely be worth a visit!
