On 5th October, St Mary’s had the pleasure of hosting the English Speaking Union (ESU) Master Class. The School opened its doors to local schools for some inspiring training in the techniques required to be an excellent public speaker. Many of the students had already competed in ESU competitions and made the most of opportunities to develop experience and increase their techniques.
A group of members from the local branch of the ESU came, bringing with them two talented young speakers, graduate students from Oxford and Cambridge respectively. Erin Fitzgerald is a Rhodes Scholar from Balliol and has experience in coaching the Oxford Union. John Gallagher, of Trinity College Dublin and Emmanuel, is an Irish champion who has represented his college in World and European Debating Championships. As well as reading for a PhD in History, John is a stand up comedian.
Training was intensive with a range of exercises culminating in small group speech performance which used the ESU model and was excellent practice for future competitions. A very good time was had by all, friendships and contacts were made and St Mary’s was thanked by ESU for support and enthusiasm.
